When Karl was elected in May 2019, the feeling across much of the Labour membership was ‘About time too.”

Before being elected to Leasowe and Moreton East, Karl had built a fine campaigning pedigree and developed first-hand election experience by contesting no less than 5 campaigns in neighbouring ward, Moreton West and Saughall Massie.

“I’d spent time trying to win a Conservative-held seat that had been returning big majorities” Karl recalls.

During his first campaign in 2011, a team was built from scratch, consisting largely of Karl’s friends and family.  A Tory majority of 900 followed. However, within 5 years this was down to just 133 – due in large part to Karl’s determination and dedication to bringing about a much-awaited Labour victory in the ward. The groundwork remains very much in place for Stan Webster to make it happen.

Karl’s own campaigning qualities were spotted early on by his home ward of Leasowe and Moreton East. Elected as Branch Secretary, he has pulled together a dynamic team of volunteers with expertise in all aspects of Party activity. “We’ve got a really good group now,” Karl says fondly. “The likes of Paul Brooks, Louise Luxon-Kewley and Alan and Kathy Runswick have all helped us to be really positive and engaged over the years.”

It’s a respect that is very mutual. Karl was chosen in October 2018 to be Labour’s local election candidate for Leasowe and Moreton East the following May. He repaid their faith with a decisive victory.

There would be no time for sitting back though. Karl would immediately be appointed onto the Environment Overview, Audit and Risk Management, Licensing and Business and Overview Scrutiny Committees. A fine way to start a journey as a Councillor!

The journey for Karl as a Party member by no means started in 2019. First joining in 1979, Karl was particularly active in NUPE (now Unison) and had worked in the NHS. He quickly became a Shop Steward and Branch Secretary and Chair of the Merseyside NUPE Stewards Health Services Committee and before long had joined the Party as a member of Upton Branch before moving to Moreton in later years.

Serving his home ward remains a big source of pride for Karl. He is familiar with the local area and is well-known locally due to his work as Chair of Wirral Development Trust and Trustee Director at Wirral Citizens’ Advice Bureau. He is also a Board Member of Wirral Play Council and a Governor at the Mosslands School. In 2020, Karl was elected as Chief Whip of the Labour Group by his fellow Labour Councillors.

When he isn’t being ‘Councillor Karl Greaney,’ Karl enjoys scuba diving and is a keen supporter of Liverpool FC. And Tranmere Rovers, since he was 9 years old,
